Yes, I actually painted patio cushions!
I am excited to finally share about the patio furniture refresh project I completed last Spring! I was waiting to write a blog post until I knew the cushion paint would hold up!
Materials:
– Set of old wood patio furniture with fabric cushions
– Sunnyside Substitute Cleaner Spray
Step One: Refinishing The Wood
First, I took the orbit sander and sanded each patio chair until it was clean and smooth. I used 40 Grit sand paper to help make the furniture extra smooth and rid of most imperfections. I then sprayed the chairs down with Sunnyside Substitute Cleaning Spray and let air dry. The cleaning spray helps the paint stick better to the furniture and helps the paint last longer. After the chairs were dry I applied the white outdoor paint with a small paint brush. I applied two coats of paint to make sure the white was even all the way around.
Step Two: Refinishing The Cushions
The cushions started out faded red and I painted them dark gray. I chose dark gray because I was worried with a lighter color of paint, the red cushion might show through or the cushions would show dirt easier. I first whipped the cushions down with a damp rag to make sure there was no dirt. Next, I painted the cushions with a soft paint brush.
Originally, I had tried spray painting the cushions. The spray paint did not go on evenly and barely covered because the fabric absorbed most of the paint. After trial and error plus some research I found the KILZ Chalk Paint which worked great and has held up for one year, so far. I have left the patio set out all year, even during the winter, and there has been no change in the paint color or paint quality. Our patio is covered so I am not sure about the paint fading from the sun. I used the color Smokey Eyes and love how it turned out.
I applied two coats of paint with a soft paint brush. After the second coat was dry, I used the orbit sander and sanded the cushions until smooth. This helps keep the soft feel to your cushions. If you do not sand the cushions, they will feel very hard and scratchy. I then applied one last thin coat of the paint, after sanding, and let dry for one day. Lastly, I sprayed every part of the cushion with Rust-Oleum NeverWet Fabric Spray and let dry for another day. This was the last step besides putting the newly refreshed furniture set on the porch and decorating.
Step Three: Styling The Porch
Styling the front porch was my favorite step! I am so thrilled with how the porch turned out! I added some buffalo check throw pillows I found on Amazon to each chair. I found the cute planters and faux plants at Real Deals. I ended up painting the legs of the flower plants white to match everything else, after I had taken these pictures. Lastly, I added the two white pots and trees to bring the eye to the front door. Don’t forget to shop my favorite decor items!
